College Football. . .Week 1 Rant

Whew!  Finally. . .college football is here.  It's probably my favorite sport and favorite time of the year.  And week one is in the books.  Here are a couple of my observations:

  • Week 1 is a throw away week - Big teams overpower little teams.  Yes, I know the money's good and smaller schools like playing the bigger schools because of the money they make.  But, c'mon!!!!  Not only do big schools risk injuring key players, how demoralizing is it when a team scores 84 points on you?! (Seek Oklahoma State v. Savannah State)  And Savannah St didn't score ONE point.  Or Florida State-69 v. Murray State-3.  There were others.  The only redeeming value for a small school team is the hope that it can'/won't get any worse.  They can only go up from here.  How would you like to go back to the locker room knowing their last string is better than your first or second strings?  Given, there's always a chance of an upset.  And we've seen them happen on occasion.  But really!?
  • Rankings don't really matter - I don't care where we start and who's ranked where, it rarely ends that way.  Michigan was a number 8?  Really?  Either they were over-ranked or Alabama is so way better than them that it will be hard for anyone to catch them or USC.  So, if you're worried about your team's ranking.  STOP!!!  They will probably be ranked somewhere else by the end of the season.
  • Big school fans should stop bragging - I have good friends who are Oregon, Oklahoma, Baylor, and Alabama fans.  PLLEAAASSSEEE stop bragging about you beating a team you were SUPPOSED to beat in the first place!!!!  It's un-becoming and irritating!!!!!  Yes, Baylor you won.  But it was SMU, what did you think would happen?  And Bama brother & sisters, we beat Michigan, but come on!  We were ranked #2 and they were #8 (probably shouldn't have been #8, sorry Michigan fans).  And for the rest of you who posted on your Facebook how you creamed the opponent, unless it was an upset, yes, you won, leave it alone.  So stop posting pics about how you smashed the opponent or celebrating over a win.  Let's save that for when our teams play real opponents.
  • It makes for boring games - The lopsided wins really make for a boring week of football.  There were some good games - Clemson v. Auburn, Florida v. Bowling Green, and Oklahoma v. UTEP was pretty good for most of the game.  But you and I know that unless we were at the game, we were changing channels.
  • Week 2 is coming - Ok, now that week 1 is out of the way, maybe week 2 will be better.

OK, that's my rant for now.  What do you think about Week 1?

Man, I used a lot of "!" in this post, didn't I?!
