Olympics - Good & Bad

I love the Olympics - just ask Cindy. I love great plays, great underdogs, and great efforts. Some of the things I've loved watching during this year's Olympics:
  • Michael Phelps & 8 Gold Medals - As much as I love his effort, I have come to appreciate his humility. He never quits trying and smiles all the while. He kinda reminds me of a grown up version of Opie.
  • USA Women's Indoor Volleyball Team - Almost lost against Italy - ranked #2 in the world - but fought hard to take it to a tie breaker game. The gals blew them out in the final game to move on to the medal round.
  • USA Women's Soccer Team - Pushed China to the limits and won the game to put them in the gold medal game. The never gave up.
  • Usain Bolt - He's just a freak of nature. Begs his coach to let him run the 100 m and blows the entire field away, breaks the world record while slowing down.
  • USA Men's 400 Hurdlers - Angelo Taylor, Kerron Clements, and Bershawn "Batman" Johnson finished 1, 2 & 3. Way to go guys.
  • Shawn Johnson - Finished with gold on the balance beam.
  • Nastia Liukin - Didn't whine when she got the silver after tying the Chinese gymnast on the uneven bars.
  • USA Basketball Teams - They are just dominating. Just as they should.
  • Henry Cejuda - At 21 years of age, Hery is the youngest US wrestler to win a gold medal. Growing up the youngest of Mexican immigrants he had never slept in a bed by himself until he went to the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, CO. His appreciation for the opportunity to represent the US was incredible.
A few things I'm surprised or disappointed in:
  • USA Gymnastic Coaches - Hey Karolyis quit whining!!!! Even the athletes accept things as they are. Shut up and coach.
  • Doping - This is just stupid. Cheaters shouldn't just be sent home, but should be shunned by the athletic community. Is there no end as to who will take what? Even a pistol shooter from North Korea was forced to give up his silver and bronze medals because he was caught taking a drug that slows the heart rate down and keeps a person from shaking.
  • Usain Bolt - His self aggrandizement was a put off to me. Yeah he's fast, in fact he's the fastest human being in history, but his "it's all about me" attitude turned me off.
  • USA Boxing Team - Troubles between the athletes and Coach Campbell has proven fatal to many a boxer's Olympic dream. It's been more than a little disappointing.
So what have been your goods, bads, and uglies?

Mike
