Best Read of 2009

Most people who know me know I like to read. I like to read biographies, books on spiritual formation/discipleship/life change (yes, Grant, I read your post :) ) and I'm a better reader than doer sometimes. I also like books about leadership, and books that challenge me. I do like to read fiction - John Grisham, Robert Ludlum, and the like - but I have to make myself read for "fun".

This past year I didn't read as many books as I have in the past, but I did read some that I would definitely recommend.

My favorite books of 2009 - these are book that I would recommend for one reason or another:

Crazy Love by Francis Chan

The books I really want to read in 2010?
Simple Life by Thom & Art Rainer
Primal by Mark Batterson
Killing Cockroaches by Tony Morgan

"Crazy Love" by Francis Chan was a book that I could NOT put down. It was encouraging, yet at the same time, so very convicting. Chan's humility and sold-out heart for Christ is incredibly contagious.

As far as favorite books for 2009, I would say, along with Chan's book, I really enjoyed a Kevin DeYoung & Ted Kluck's book "Why We're Not Emergent: By Two Guys Who Should Be." It is a very engaging and hits right at the heart of where a lot of the church is right now in regards to the whole 'Emergent/Emerging' conversation.

Let me know how Thom & Art Rainer's book is this year, as I've enjoyed a few of Thom's books a few years back.

Camp is Good!

I'm home from a week at a student camp - Camp Chaparral . I was there teaching students how God created them for a place of ministry and encouraging them to involved - somehow. . .somewhere. I was also the guest of Pam & Steve Sparks. They are wonderful friends from my Lufkin days. Steve is the Assistant Director of the camp. Better give a shout out to the staff - Hey Mike, David, Heather, Doug, Tim, Nate, Govani (spelling?) - thanks for a great week. These guys work really, really hard to make your camp stay the greatest. And it was. But I'm exhausted! I'm beginning to wonder if I'm getting too old for this kind of thing? The worship was great - thanks to the brown band ! Hey Michell, Gabi, Rooster, Noah, and #14. They'll get it. Jon Randles really challenged us with his messages - 7 Marks of a Disciple . Need a speaker that speaks truth with wisdom? Get Randles. College or students. He's good. But the late nights and early mornings - WHEW!!

Question for You

I was listening to one of the local radio stations - kwyq, The Way FM, this morning on the way to the office. They were asking the question, "If you could live in a totally Christian community would you?" Responses varied. I would be interested in knowing what you think. What was I thinking?

This morning was run day. So after some coffee, a yogurt, and time with God, I laced up the New Balances and hit the road. What I didn't realize when I started was the workout I would endure. Started off easy enough - just like most of my other workouts, a good pace to get warmed up. Then the thought hit me - let's push it. Why does this thought always seem to come out of nowhere? I don't have a clue. So I hit a fartlek. NO! It's not what you think so stop grinning or laughing or whatever you're doing. I came across this workout running with my friend Stacey. Stacey ran fartleks in high-school when he ran the mile and 2-mile for Alvord . Went to state in each. He then ran cross-country for what is now Texas A&M -Kingsville, Texas . If you don't know anything about Kingsville, Texas it's freakin' hot there. Anyone who runs in that heat can run anywhere. So what's a fartlek? According to Wikepedia Fartlek , which means ‘speed play’
